4 Springtime Tips to Wake Up Your Lawn

Wednesday April 6, 2016

Your lawn is just awakening to a brand new spring. And, like most of us waking up in the morning, it will soon be grumpily demanding food and attention. Here are four ways to get your lawn up and at ’em!

1. Spring Cleaning If your lawn has a serious case of bedhead, rake up and remove any dead leaves and winter debris which can harbor fungus, disease and over-wintering insects.

2. Aeration Spring is also a great time to aerate. Aeration helps reduce soil compaction and improves air, water and nutrient circulation in the soil. It also helps reduce thatch, the spongy layer of dead leaves and debris that builds up between the grass leaves. It’s a good idea to aerate twice a year, once in the spring and then again in the fall.

3. Re-Seeding If you have some dead or bare patches in your lawn, early spring is also a great time to re-seed. Rake the area with a hard tine rake to loosen the soil before applying the seed. Use a lawn seed mix with multiple types of grasses to make your lawn stronger and more resistant to disease. Apply a light layer of B.O.S.S. on top of the seed. Keep the soil moist, but not soaked, for about 4 to 6 weeks. After that, treat the area as an established lawn.

4. Fertilize Fertilizer is like coffee for you lawn. Just as many of us are, ahem, not our best before our first cup of joe, most lawns need a little fertilizer to really get going. We recommend Colorado’s Choice WaterSaver SpringGreen + Iron. SpringGreen is an organic fertilizer that contains slow-release nitrogen and non-staining iron, which encourages an early green-up, and mycorrhiaze which promotes healthy root growth.
