A well-chosen houseplant or two can brighten up any room in your house, even the bathroom! After a long, hot shower the atmosphere in the bathroom perfectly mimics the lush, humid tropics. Plus, there’s always plenty of water at hand (try sticking your plants in the sink or the shower for a quick, easy soak down!) But the bathroom isn’t ideal for every plant. In between showers, bathrooms tend to be colder than the rest of the house, and these temperature swings can be tough on more delicate plants. And most bathrooms tend to have fairly low light. But there are certain plants that will simply love the lavatory! Here’s a few of our favorites:
Lucky Bamboo – Lucky bamboo is technically not bamboo, but it is certainly lucky. This little plant is darn near indestructible. It’s happy in just about any level of light and can live in just a vase of water. Plus it looks great on a vanity or sink!
Ferns – Ferns are a family of shade loving plants found all over the world – maybe even in your bathroom! The high humidity and filtered light of a typical bathroom matches ferns’ native forest habitats. Bird Nest, Boston fern and Staghorn ferns are some of the best for bathroom settings.
Snake Plant – Snake plant or Mother-in-law’s-tounge, shows up on just about every list of houseplant suggestions. And for good reason. It’s one of the most adaptable plants you can have anywhere in the house! Snake plant will do well in almost any light level. It does great with any amount of humidity and needs only infrequent watering.
Tillandsia – Tilladsia, or air plants, are some of the most uniquie plants on the planet. They don’t need any soil or even to be planted at all. Plus, they get most of their moisture from the air, so they love the humidity of the bathroom. And there are literally hundreds of different varieties, so you’re sure to find one to match your curtains!
Orchids – A delicate orchid, elegantly arching over the sink adds a touch of the exotic to any washroom. Orchids have the reputation for being difficult, but several varieties including Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums can thrive in the bathroom. They like bright, filtered bathroom window light and adore the humid atmosphere.
