Planting Potatoes

Let’s grow some potatoes! 🥔

Growing potatoes is super fun and it takes barely any supplies! All you need to do is pop over to O’Toole’s Garden Centera and grab some seed potatoes, Colorado’s Choice BOSS, a used a barrel from home and you’re good to go!

To start you need to ‘chit’ (sprout) the potatoes by taking seed potatoes and leaving them in direct sunlight for 1-2 weeks so the eyes grow sprouts! The day before you plan on planting you need to create potato ‘seeds’ by chopping the potatoes into 1-2” sections with one or two eyes each. Leave these overnight so they get a protective film on them to prevent rotting in the ground!

Fill a well-draining container – we are partial to half-barrels and potato bags – but you can plant in anything that drains well! Be scrappy! Think 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in them or even tires!

Fill the barrel with 4” of soil, plant the potato ‘seeds’ cut side down and cover with another 4” of soil. As the potatoes grow you want to keep covering the leaves with soil until you reach the top of your container. The more times you cover the more potatoes you’ll yield!

Have fun! 🥔
